Toronto Newcomer Day 2021 artists Marta Solek, Ahmed Moneka share their story

Every year since 2015, at the Toronto Newcomer Day event hosted by the City of Toronto, a number of newcomer artists showcase their talents as part of the day’s lineup of activities. Fellow Torontonians cheer them on and join in the celebrations. During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions, the 2021 event was held online on May 25. Marta Solek and Ahmed Moneka are two musical performers who took part in the virtual edition this year along with their bands: Medusa, and Moneka Arabic Jazz respectively.

Marta Solek, a multi-instrumentalist from Poland arrived in Canada in 2017. And Iraqi musician-actor Ahmed Moneka moved here in 2015. The two immigrant artists have made a name for themselves in this country. Watch them talk about their music, and what about Toronto appeals to them.
