OHRC says the spirit of welcoming Syrian refugees should continue

Canadians have extended a warm welcome to Syrian refugees and this should be taken further by employers when the Syrian refugees start looking for jobs, says Ontario Human Rights Commissioner Renu Mandhane. The commission has been working with the Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants (OCASI) and other faith based organizations to educate employers as well as to bring awareness amongst refugees about their rights. Speaking to NEW CANADIANS at the Skills for Change Diversity at Work 2016 conference, she said there is discrimination at workplace for all immigrants; and most immigrants- because they come from countries where human rights codes are not very strict – are not aware of their rights here in Canada. The commission is working to address both these issues.
