Surrey Stories of Impact: Erica’s journey from Colombia to Canada, marked by resilience and hope

After building a career in Colombia as a biology teacher and insect researcher, Erica arrived in Canada facing language barriers and the challenge of starting over. Through education, community support, and volunteer opportunities like Library Champions, she gradually rebuilt her confidence, connections, and sense of belonging.

Her journey took a life-changing turn when she was diagnosed with cancer — and later recovered — strengthening her determination to keep moving forward and pursue her goals.

Today, she continues to grow, contribute to her community, and work toward returning to her passion for science.

This video is part of Stories of Impact, a storytelling series produced by the Surrey Local Immigration Partnership (LIP), managed by DIVERSEcity, featuring newcomers’ experiences of building their lives and finding belonging in Canada.
