Supporting international students
Halifax West High School mirrors Canada’s multiculturalism. The school has been taking in young people from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds and helping them integrate into the larger social system, step by step. Today it has students from over 55 countries. How did it all start? It was about 20 years ago, that YMCA partnered with the school to set up the first school settlement program in the country. Since then, the YMCA has walked with the school to understand the needs of its diverse population. The school has developed new initiatives to help its students master the English language, know and learn about the Canadian way of living and the work culture, always providing support to foster and atmosphere of understanding and supporting each other.
