Indigenous History: From Assimilation to ‘We Are All Treaty People’

August 15, 2024 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

The London & Middlesex Local Immigration Partnership (LMLIP) invites you to a powerful video-sharing circle featuring Part 2 of the “They Came for the Children” series, titled “From Assimilation to ‘We Are All Treaty People'”.

This 21-minute film explores essential historical concepts including assimilation, colonization, cultural genocide, and the significance of treaties in Canada. It features insights from respected Indigenous leaders, scholars, and community members.

Following the screening, our Indigenous presider, Mary Anne Kechego, will lead a sharing circle. This is an opportunity for attendees to reflect on the content, share their thoughts, and engage in meaningful dialogue about our shared history and responsibilities.

Key topics covered in the film:

  • The impact of colonization on Indigenous communities
  • The Doctrine of Discovery and its lasting effects
  • Understanding treaties and their significance today
  • The concept of “We Are All Treaty People”

Whether you’re new to Canada or have lived here for generations, this event offers valuable insights into the country’s complex history and the ongoing journey towards reconciliation.

This event is part of LMLIP’s ongoing commitment to fostering understanding, inclusion, and civic engagement among all members of our community. We encourage both newcomers and long-time residents to attend and participate in this important conversation.
