For many newcomer communities, cricket is more than just a sport; it’s also a reminder of home, nostalgia, and a shared culture. One of the most cherished expressions of that shared culture is street cricket—a spirited, grassroots version played informally in parking lots, alleyways, and streets. Experience cricket fever this May 31, 2025, at Canada’s first-ever street cricket fundraiser, Cricket to Conquer Cancer, in Mississauga, ON.
Community members, corporate teams, celebrities, and cricket enthusiasts will come together at Celebration Square in Mississauga for the Princess Margaret Cricket to Conquer Cancer event, united in their effort to raise funds for cancer research and patient care.
Cricket, community, and a cause that matters
Nearly 2 in 5 Canadians are expected to face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. For many, the cause is not only deeply personal but urgent, too.
Cricket to Conquer Cancer is raising funds for Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, one of the world’s leading cancer research and treatment centres. Through fundraising, philanthropy, and innovative programs, The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation and Centre drive groundbreaking research and advances in cancer care, and help improve outcomes for patients.
“The money raised fuels cancer breakthroughs, involving early detection, investing in cancer mental health, and more advanced treatment options,” explains Brendan Ennis, senior director of corporate and community partnerships at The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation and co-founder of Cricket to Conquer Cancer.
Investing in cancer mental health is equally important, adds Brendan. “The journey, for both patients and their families, can feel like an emotional roller coaster. The Centre is also at the forefront of developing innovative treatments, such as theranostics and advanced immunotherapy, offering more precise and less toxic alternatives to traditional treatments.”

Welcoming players of all experience levels, from seasoned pros to first-timers, the event ensures an enjoyable experience for everyone.
Participants register under two divisions: Corporate or Community, and each team (made up of six to eight players) must raise $6,000 before game day.
For companies, it’s a great opportunity to encourage team-building and collaboration while contributing to a cause that impacts so many lives. For community members, it’s a chance to come together with family, friends, and community networks for a day of fun and friendly competition, and play for a cause.
On Match Day, teams will be paired based on the skill level they’ve selected, ensuring an enjoyable experience for everyone. Top fundraising teams will also have the opportunity to add a celebrity to their roster through the Celebrity Draft, with international stars and cricket icons already lined up.
Ultimately, Cricket to Conquer Cancer is more than just cricket. It’s a celebration of the spirit of the sport, fostering a sense of community, collaboration, and hope for those affected by cancer. “Cricket is the second-fastest growing sport in the world,” says Ashni Ramsammy, Manager of Cricket to Conquer Cancer. “We’re bringing together the sport and the community, and we’re all playing for the same cause — to create a world free from the fear of cancer.”
