Canada to introduce two immigration streams for Ukrainians fleeing the war
As Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine continues to wreak havoc in the country, Canada remains steadfast in support of Ukrainian nationals. The latest efforts include an announcement by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) about two new immigration streams for Ukrainians who want to come to Canada temporarily or permanently.
No limit on how many can apply
“We will create a Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel, available for individuals fleeing Ukraine. There will be no limit to the number of Ukrainians who can apply. This is the fastest, safest, and most efficient way for Ukrainians to come to Canada and eliminates many of the normal visa requirements. All Ukrainian nationals will be able to apply through this new path, and, pending background check and security screening, their stay in Canada could be extended by at least 2 years,” stated IRCC.
Canada aims to have the extended pathway open for applications in two weeks. In the meantime, Ukrainians are encouraged to apply through other programs, and IRCC says “their applications will be prioritized”.

Pathway for permanent residence
For Ukrainian nationals who are immediate and extended family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents and may want to start a new life in Canada, a special family reunification sponsorship pathway for permanent residence will be implemented.
“We will develop the details of this program in the coming weeks, including by working with the Ukrainian Canadian Congress,” read a statement by IRCC, further stating that the individuals will be eligible to apply for open work permits.
