Beware of scammers: Toronto Police
People, particularly those of South Asian descent, are being targeted by an immigration scam, Toronto police have warned.
The scammers make unsolicited calls telling people that they are Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) employees, and asking them to transfer money to an account to ensure that their immigration status is valid. Reminding public that immigration status is not a factor when they are a victim of a crime, the police have urged anyone who has any information about the scam, or receive any such unsolicited calls, to contact them. People should contact CIC for their immigration related issues, police said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Colin Stewart at 416-808-2300, or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
